Since 1929, The Ghan has taken travellers on the ultimate  adventure through the heart of Australia. Now it’s your turn to explore the continent’s vastness and wild beauty. Explore the tropical Top End and ancient Red Centre, taking time to acquaint yourself with the rich history, colourful characters and awe-inspiring landscapes that comprise the Australian Outback.

Enjoy regionally-based dining, relaxing accommodation, friendly service and a great social atmosphere on board. Along your journey, experience a selection of fascinating Off Train Excursions at iconic Outback destinations including Alice Springs and Katherine. 

2015-2016 Journey Highlights

Four day, three night Ghan – Darwin-Alice Springs-Adelaide
Available 2015 Peak Season
A new extended service of The Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide has been introduced for the 2015 peak travel season, taking guests through the heart of the Australian Outback on a 76-hour adventure.
Enjoy Off Train Excursions at Katherine, more time in Alice Springs including a spectacular dinner under the stars at the MacDonnell Ranges and a full day to explore the underground wonders of Coober Pedy.
For the first time, guests have the option to upgrade their journey to include a fly-in visit of Uluru, getting back in time to rejoin The Ghan for the full rail experience.
The extended Ghan will operate between 23 May and 22 August, 2015 for Darwin-Adelaide journeys only.

Great Southern Rail introduces the Outback short stop aboard The Ghan – a unique opportunity for guests to set foot in some of the most isolated and magical parts of Australia to witness an unforgettable Outback sunrise or sunset.
On journeys heading north to Darwin, guests can disembark to watch the morning sun climb over the horizon in the remote reaches of northern South Australia.

On journeys heading south to Adelaide, guests can cast their eyes skyward for an glittering showcase of stars as they enjoy an Outback evening in Manguri.
