28 December 2011 - The Ghan service interuption.
The aftermath of Cyclone Grant has led to the derailment of a freight train between Katherine and Darwin which is restricting The Ghan's operations.
The Ghan is presently stationed at Katherine as it was unable to travel further to Darwin. The Stuart Highway is also presently closed north of Katherine and we have now been advised it will be closed for an estimated time of 48 hours.
This means that we are unable, at present, to transport guests on the northbound Ghan from Katherine to Darwin and the Southbound service from Darwin to Katherine is cancelled.
The Ghan will be departing from Katherine as scheduled (28 Dec 2011) on its southbound journey to Adelaide via Alice Springs.
At this stage it is not known when the track will be re-opened and it is anticipated that, pending the re-opening, future services will terminate in Katherine and all guests will be transported to Darwin by coach.
The next Ghan service departing Adelaide on the 01 January 2012 will be terminating in Katherine and all guest will be coached to Darwin.
The next service out of Darwin 04 January 2012 will be departing via coach to join the train in Katherine.
