Concession Savings on Australia's Great Train Journeys

Great Southern Rail offers fantastic fares to Australian Concession card holders on The Ghan, Indian Pacific and The Overland.

Under an arrangement with the Australian Federal Government Pension Concession Card Holders, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card Holders, State Seniors and Veterans* are entitled to significant fare privileges aboard The Ghan, the Indian Pacific and The Overland.

PENSION CONCESSION CARD HOLDERS/COMMONWEALTH SENIORS HEALTH CARD HOLDERS

Pension Concession Card holders and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders can now save up to 55% off the standard adult fare in Red Service Day/Nighter seats and up to 32% off the standard adult Gold Service Fare.

Further discounts may apply for Pension Concession Card Holders travelling with South Australian, New South Wales or Victorian Pension Free Travel Vouchers*.

Concessions* are valid for holders of Australian Pension Concession Cards (PCC) or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) issued by Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs.

STATE SENIORS CARD HOLDERS

Australian State or Territory Seniors Card holders can save as much as 25% off the Standard Adult fare when travelling in Gold and Red Service on The Ghan, Indian Pacific or The Overland.

VETERANS

Certain Veterans* receiving concessions from the Department of Veterans Affairs are entitled to significant savings in Red Service Day/Nighter seats and Gold Service. Further to this, their travelling companion is eligible for the same discount when travelling as a carer.*

Terms and conditions:

Pensioner Concession Card holders and certain Veterans may be entitled to Concession Fares that are partly or fully funded by the Commonwealth or State Governments.  To qualify for Concession Fares, an Australian Pensioner Concession Card must be presented at the time of booking; must be valid at the time of travel and must be carried at all times during travel.  Not all sectors are included in arrangements for the funding of concessions.  Funding for concessions may be withdrawn subsequent to the printing of this document and any rates quoted may therefore change, without notice. 

* Veterans include (i) Totally and permanently incapacitated veterans; (ii) Veterans entitled to the extreme disablement adjustment; (iii)   Intermediate rate disability Pensioners; (iv) 100% general rate Pensioners in South Australia; (v) World War 1 Veterans, their spouses or widows; (vi) Blinded disability Pensioners; (vii)  Veterans receiving the disability pension for pulmonary tuberculosis class B and class C; (viii) Veterans receiving the special disability amount Items 1-14 (listed under section 27 of the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986); (ix) Blinded Service Pensioners. A carer can be any person travelling with a Special Veteran. Great Southern Rail requires a medical certificate to be required prior to travel confirming the need of a carer for the Veteran travelling. Veterans and Carers can only be booked direct with Great Southern Rail. New South Wales residents that are in receipt of a Government Pension from either Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs are eligible for further discounts to the pension fare when travelling in a Red Day/Nighter Seat to the border (Broken Hill) upon surrender of vouchers. Printed vouchers are not provided in New South Wales (electronic verification). South Australian residents that are in receipt of a Government Pension from either Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs are eligible for further discounts to the pension fare when travelling travel in a Red Day/Nighter Seat to the border (Broken Hill or Port Augusta) or Red Standard Seat (Bordertown) upon surrender of vouchers. Victorian residents that are in receipt of a Government Pension from either Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs are eligible for travel in a Red Standard Seat to the border (Bordertown) upon surrender of vouchers. Voucher Travel can be taken as two one way trips or one return trip. State Seniors Card Holders means a card issued by a state or territory government to eligible residents of that state, being generally aged over 60 years and no longer working fulltime.
