Travel to the historical precinct of the Alice Springs Telegraph Station. Here you will learn about day to day life of the first European settlement in Alice Springs and how the station played a pivotal role in bridging the isolation and communication gap between remote Australian towns. Established in 1872 to relay messages between Darwin and Adelaide, it is the best preserved of the 12 stations along the Overland Telegraph Line.
Visit the attraction triangle where you can choose to visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base to learn about the vital medical care the service provides to thousands living in Outback Australia. See the wide variety of historic radios and medical equipment that would have been used on the RFDS flights of the past. Here you’ll enjoy a relaxing lunch.
Go on to visit the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame, one of three women’s museums in Australia, dedicated to preserving the place of women in history for their special contribution to Australia’s heritage. Offering three exhibits and based in the Old Alice Springs Gaol, you can see two interesting attractions in the one location.
Alternatively, you can take a detour to the Reptile Centre, home to the largest reptile display in Central Australia with more than 100 reptiles of over 50 different species exhibited including Perentie Goannas, Thorny Devils and Frill-neck Lizards. Terry the Saltwater Crocodile’s exhibit features underwater viewing enabling you to get up close to this mighty predator.
